Notes From the Field - Ecuador
OUT ON THE BOAT

The captains have been so wonderful in helping me get the photographs I am trying to get. I have been going back and forth between a couple different boats. When I am on the boat with a captain’s tower, I always ride with the captain. When I am on the boat with one level, I am able to go on the very front. This way I can always be sure to get the best pictures with unobstructed views.
WHALES TO DANCE IN THE HOLIDAY

It is amazing how the people can enjoy a holiday here in Ecuador. A holiday seems to always turn into a nation-wide party. People dance in the street and prepare lots of traditional style food. In the morning people traditionally eat “encebollado.” It is kind of like a fish soup with onions, which doesn’t sound terribly appetizing, but it is delicious. Trust me!

A DAY FULL OF WHALES

This day the weather was very sad, but we had many, many whales. They were very near the coast. First we had a group of two animals, near Isla Salango, but then we were quickly surrounded by about eight humpback whales.
It was a very active group, we had tails, and tail slapping. I always like these moments, because that's when the tourists scream and howl with happiness. There was a lady, who since leaving the port had been dizzy. I could always see that although she felt bad, as long as the whales were close, she stood to watch them.

I also want to have a little bit time spending with whales. I like them very much, mainly their huge body and their swimming capability attracts me. I want to take my girlfriend in the ocean and show the view of whales as a boyfriend gifts . Hope she will like it.

Life Lessons

When I'm in Puerto Lopez, I feel that the whale watching has driven everything. It brings in droves of tourists that help fuel the local businesses. Nowadays, there are many vehicles, much more than in the past. We have a bank and even an ATM. We also have taxis and many restaurants where you can eat delicious local food. Breaded shrimp is my favorite! But quantity of people and these signs of a progressing town do not mean improved quality of life.

Our headquarters, Puerto Lopez, is the site where we base our whale research. Puerto Lopez is a small town within the Machalilla National Park. This past month the park had its 31st anniversary, and I had my birthday, as well.

A Whale Named María Isabel

The past two days in Puerto Lopez have been bright and sunny. I'm really pleased, because we are now finding very active whales near the coast. Today I found one that reminded me of a whale we observed and named “Maria Isabel” a few years ago.

We started the whale season, yet the days are very sad and dark, for two weeks we have had rain and cold. But the whales jump as if nothing happened. He does not mind the cold weather that South America is suffering.
This year Galo Echeverria help us, he is a new naturalist guide, and help us with the photographs. We also have some guides that are currently trained to assist us and start the environmental education program next week. Schools are on holiday by the end of the first school term.
