Project Aims:
• Understand the current status of conservation of small cetaceans in the National Park Machalilla.
• Seek alternatives for the conservation of small cetaceans and for fishermen.
Project Justification:
The interaction of cetaceans with artisanal fisheries is recognized as one of the main marine conservation issues affecting their populations worldwide.
Project Methodology:
For seven months, twelve observers accompanied the fishermen in their fishing operations. In each research trip was recorded fishing operation and for nets to find dolphins in morphometric data were taken, position, number of animals, among others.

Centro de investigación de ballenas, Machalilla National Park, Tourism Ministry of Ecuador, Universidad Central del Ecuador, Colegio Provincia de Manabí, Environmental Ministry, Asociación de Pescadores Artesanales (ASOPESCAR), DIGEIM, este proyecto fue financiado por la Comisión Permanente del Pacífico Sur.
Management Outcomes:
This study allowed us to have extended the fishing area of the artisanal fleet ocean species reaching impact and has increased the rates of cetacean bycatch.
