Pacific Whale Foundation's Advocacy in Action

• Preventing vessel-whale collisions through our Be Whale Aware program, which includes free annual training workshops for vessel captains and other ocean users, educational materials provided to the public and free "Be Whale Aware" stickers for stand-up paddlers, kayakers, windsurfers and boat operators. • Advocating for responsible dolphin-watching through our Be Dolphin Wise educational program.

• Fighting to end commercial aquarium collecting in Hawaii, including protesting against sales of live aquarium wildlife at Petco. Read more

• Providing testimony, gathering petition signatures, promoting letter-writing and participating in meetings with Maui County lawmakers which led to the successful establishment of a ban on the display of captive whales and dolphins in Maui County.

• Testimony and advocacy that prevented the U.S. Navy from conducting LFA Sonar Testing in Hawaii

• Successfully halting the operation of a high-speed, ultra-large “superferry” in Hawaii’s whale calving areas, through our expert testimony, public information campaigns and demonstrations, government meetings and other efforts. 
• Providing testimony which helped establish a Maui County law banning plastic grocery bags at supermarkets and large retail stores.

• Derailing a proposal to legitimize commercial whaling at the International Whaling Commission in 2010. Ongoing participation in the Scientific Committee of the International Whaling Commission. Read more.

•  Promoting responsible whalewatching as a sustainable alternative to whaling by sending Pacific Whale Foundation staff to lead workshops and programs at a United Nations Environment Programme-Caribbean Environment Programme (UNEP-CEP) sponsored “Workshop on Marine Mammal Watching in the Wider Caribbean Region”  in 2011. • Removing thousands of pounds of marine debris from Maui’s beaches through our Volunteering on Vacation program and staff participation in the Adopt-a-Highway program

• Promoting sustainable seafood choices to hundreds of thousands of Maui visitors through our partnership with Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch Program. Learn more

•  Providing scientific testimony and thousands of petition signatures in favor of designating Hawaiian insular false killer whales as endangered. Read more

• Providing educational information about whales and marine wildlife through our free visitor publication, Maui Adventure Guide and through our free wildlife watching guides.
